Respecting Culture

Posted by John Coxon on

Land is significantly important to Indigenous peoples around the world. It's not about ownership, it's about identity, who they are, where they are from. Land is at the centre of their creation stories. Land is a.connection to their ancestors. While ownership of land conveys wealth to individual, non-indigenous people, to First nations people, the Tangata Whenua, Aboriginal Torres Strait Islanders and other Indigenous people, wealth as related to land is measured in terms of sustenance, sustainability, co-habitation, culture, spirit and identity. Many of us fossick or mine for natural materials for our arts. It's important we remain aware of, and respect this connection between culture and land.
